UPDATE:  The Health Impact Project, in cooperation with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation, will support up to two health impact assessments (HIAs) in Minnesota under the Health Impact Project’s current call for proposals (CFP). These new HIAs are in addition to the eight demonstration projects that will be selected from a nationwide search.  Grants will be for up to $125,000.  All parameters in the current CFP apply, with the exception that, for the two Minnesota-based HIAs, the project will also consider proposals that address transit-oriented development (for example, neighborhood planning in relation to new public transit stops.)

UPDATE:  The deadline for Minnesota-based projects to apply for funding has been extended to 5:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday, June 15, 2011, to allow a full month to complete a brief proposal. The deadline for all other applicants remains 5:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday, June 1, 2011.

Government agencies, educational institutions and nonprofit organizations are encouraged to apply. Brief proposals must be submitted on or before 5:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday, June 1, 2011, with the exception of Minnesota-based projects, which must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday, June 15, 2011.

Details:

  • The Health Impact Project will support up to eight HIA demonstration projects intended to inform decisions on proposed local, tribal or state policies, projects or programs.
  • The Health Impact Project will also fund HIAs that address federal decisions that will have impacts limited to a specific state, region or local community, such as permitting a new mine or building a new highway.
  • Grants will range from $25,000 to $125,000 each and must be completed within 18 months.

HIA uses a practical approach that brings together scientific data, health expertise and public input to identify the potential health effects of a new proposal and to build in recommendations that minimize risks and capitalize on opportunities to improve health. Learn more about HIA.

Applicants need not have experience with HIA to apply to the CFP. They should have knowledge of the decision-making process that they aim to influence and the ability to communicate effectively with all of the players in that process, from elected officials to citizens. Grantees will receive training, mentoring and technical assistance from the Health Impact Project and leading HIA experts.
